Cherry Audio’s Mercury-8 could easily be the next-gen Jupiter in software. Built upon the strengths of the original, it takes this vintage classic to contemporary heights, through a series of exceptional enhancements.
Pros
- Stunningly good recreation of the Roland Jupiter-8, from the early-to-mid ’80s.
- It’s brimming with contemporary content, but can be perfectly vintage too.
- Extends the Jupiter’s usability, with a significant number of enhancements over the original hardware.
- Compared to hardware, it’s a total bargain, even at many times the price!
Cons
- You might be tempted to try and locate an original, which might be a tad pricier!
sigma 20 200mm f 3 5 6 3 dg contemporary review this superzoom stretches...
For me, the Sigma 20-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Contemporary succeeds where other lenses have failed. I’ve used a whole bunch of ‘superzoom’ travel lenses in the past, on both full-frame and crop-sensor cameras, and they’ve always left me wanting more when it comes to wide-angle coverage. You could almost say they don’t come up short enough. This amazing lens goes from an ultra-wide-angle perspective to powerful telephoto reach at the flick of a wrist. Oh, and it also does 0.5x macro. Just how versatile can a lens be? $999 at Amazon $999 at BHPhoto $999 at Best Buy $1,495 at Walmart

- +Unprecedented ultra-wide coverage
- +0.5x macro facility
- +Impressive image quality

- Straightforward to use.
- The sound signature is musical enough to satisfy many.
Cons
- Streaming issues, even after firmware update.
- The case is great for protection, not for use.

tempotec v3 blaze review ProsCons...
The TempoTec V3 Blaze is an affordable DAP with a good sound signature, versatility, and power for pretty much anything, except the hardest-to-drive headphones.
Pros
- An increase in power makes for a more impactful sound.
- The versatility of output options makes for many choices.
Cons
- The case makes functionality difficult at best when mounted.
- The simplicity of the OS will not be for everyone.
tempotec v1 review ProsCons...
The Tempotec V1 is a true audiophile-sounding DAP in the way it presents the details with finesse and effortlessness without sounding bright. This approach to a detailed presentation is similar to that of high-end DAPs, where details are not forced yet remain apparent.
Pros
- Easy to use.
- Neutral and transparent sound.
- Detailed yet not bright-sounding.
Cons
- Small Screen.

Soliste is a fine example of modelling software, providing some really engaging sounds, particularly for the contemporary domain. If you are looking for an acoustic clone, MPE becomes fairly essential, but you’ll need to put the hours in to get the best results. £265 at Thomann
Pros
- Individually crafted plugins, for violin, viola, cello and double bass.
- There’s an abundance of control, especially if using a MPE controller, such as Osmose.
- Equally playable with conventional MIDI controllers.
- The instrument plugins are also available to purchase individually.
Cons
- While Soliste is truly fascinating and unique, it doesn’t sound entirely authentic and natural.
- You’ll need to spend time with Soliste, to get the most from it.
