The iPhone 16e is a classic case of "lopsided" engineering, pairing the cutting-edge A18 chipset and Apple Intelligence support with dated hardware omissions. While its battery life and performance are industry-leading for its class, the lack of MagSafe, a 60Hz screen, and a secondary camera lens frustrate power users. It is an ideal "no-frills" device for those entering the Apple ecosystem, but it struggles to compete with more versatile Android alternatives at the same price point.

⚡ Where Reviewers Disagreed
The following areas saw meaningful disagreement across sources.
- Camera Quality: 5 sources praised the single-lens performance, while 4 sources heavily criticised the lack of an ultra-wide lens and zoom inconsistency. - You want the latest Apple Intelligence features at the lowest possible entry price.
❌ Skip This If…
- You rely on MagSafe accessories for your daily workflow.
- You are accustomed to 120Hz displays and would notice the 60Hz downgrade.
- You need a versatile camera setup with ultra-wide or telephoto capabilities.
📈 Sentiment Trends Over Time
- Market Positioning — Reviewers consistently view the 16e as a "lopsided" device; initial reviews focused on the A18 chip, while long-term assessments highlight the frustration of missing basic features like MagSafe.
The iPhone 16e is a reliable, high-performance handset that nails the basics for newcomers to the Apple ecosystem. Its stellar battery life and future-proof A18 chip are its greatest assets, though these are hampered by the omission of a 120Hz screen and MagSafe. While it is a competent phone, value-conscious buyers should compare it against the iPhone 15 or similarly priced Android models before committing. Choose this if you want a long-term, no-fuss iPhone, but skip it if you are a power user who values camera versatility.
Reviewer Perspectives & Source Breakdown
iPhone 16e Review: Apple’s cheapest phone doesn’t recognise my dog and I...
If you really want an iPhone with a 16 in the title – or perhaps crave Apple Intelligence – but your budget is limited, then the 16e makes some sense. But for most, I’d probably suggest older models.
Pros
- Cheapest most recent iPhone
- High resolution camera sensor
- Tough construction for a “cheap” phone
- Apple Intelligence can be useful for photo editing
Cons
- Expensive compared to similar Android models
- Just one camera
- Only available in black or white
- Low resolution selfie camera
- Restricted Portrait mode

With the powerful A18 chip, an improved battery and Apple Intelligence, the device is aimed at anyone looking for a modern iPhone experience without having to pay the full price of the Pro models. But what exactly are the strengths and weaknesses of the iPhone 16e? Is it perhaps just a compromise that is better not to make? In this test, we take a detailed look at the new smallest iPhone.

- Powerful A18 chip with high efficiency
- Excellent battery life
- Super Retina XDR display with high contrast
- Powerful 48 MP camera for stunning detail

Apple iPhone 16e review: Elevated basics...
The iPhone 16e has considerable upgrades over the outgoing iPhone SE 2022; you get a bigger 6.1-inch OLED panel, battery life that beats even the iPhone 16, terrific performance thanks to the A18, and all the Apple Intelligence features you could want. It also has USB-C connectivity and switches over to Face ID, and as a daily driver, it nails the basics. However, there's a single camera at the back, with the device missing out on a wide-angle lens. You don't get MagSafe or a 60Hz panel, and at $599, the device isn't as good a value as the iPhone 15. That said, if you need Apple Intelligence and stellar battery life, the iPhone 16e still makes sense.
Pros
- +Apple Intelligence
- +Incredible battery life
- +A18 has excellent performance
- +Dedicated action button
- +Face ID and USB-C connectivity
- +Decent camera at the back
Cons
- -No wide-angle lens
- -60Hz panel
- -Not a good value
- -Misses out on MagSafe
